Cabo Yoyogi-Uehara is located 2.5 kilometers from Shibuya, Tokyo. The complex building contains 7 residential units, 13 offices, 3 restaurants, 1 gallery, and 1 book store within a floor area of 1,160 square meters.
Situated at the border between urban and suburban areas, Yoyogi-Uehara is a town features both commercial area and residential area are seamlessly integrated . In such an environment, we envisioned creating a new part of cityscape rather than creating a single building within the site.
Given the narrow and deep shape of the site, with a width of 12.5 meters and a depth of 52.5 meters, we incorporated a street-like passage on the side of the building which functions as a multipurpose usage for the stores on the street level and creates a new cityscape. Unlike typical buildings, we aimed to create a facade of the building, with its infrastructure of roads and trees, to create an avenue-like feeling and develop a sense of community.
The activities of stores on the street level become the facade of this complex building and create a continuous sense of community. Moreover, activities along the street will extend into the surrounding neighborhood, attracting new people and diversifying the community. The design of this building is more simplified rather than decorative, using organic concrete finishes on the floors and walls, accentuating the activities of the occupants and highlighting the individuality of each shop.
From the 2nd floor to the fifth floor, a mix of 7 residential units and 12 offices allows occupants to choose between work and residence according to their lifestyle. The interiors are designed to facilitate multifaceted use, with features like large bay windows for storage or placing beds.
The team for this building was as complex as the project was. The members were mainly developers/contractors, design architects, and branding designers/operators, conscious that urban planning has transitioned gradually from architectural design to facility operation. With locally rooted operations such as bookstores and cafes occupying the premises, the longstanding history of the area is preserved, and the unique culture of Yoyogi-Uehara is integrated into the site through the streets creating a new scenery for the neighborhood.
