Bowie Creators is a visionary and self-proclaimed home for queer and feminist creators from around the world. The gallery supports passionate creators whose ideas and actions have the power to make a difference. This project is an integral part of the development of a commercial gallery built in 1986 and was renovated in 2021.
The concept is based on the creation of an uncluttered, flexible and bright space. The challenge was to transform an originally irregular arcade into a path of asymmetrical volumes, to create segmented spaces that would allow for harmonious displays of different works and styles of paintings, photos and sculptures.
In order to carry out this transformation, we intentionally left the white walls and the technical elements visible (necessary for the functioning of the arcade). The intention was to have functional elements be an integral part of the space's cladding to give a value of transparency and a reinterpretation of industrial minimalism.
This gallery aims to shake up codes and thoughts through LGBTIQ+ exhibitions. It was therefore important for this project to bring an architecture that follows the values the space advocates: creators, inspiration, empower, connect. For this, the architectural concept is based on the installation of a blue resin on the floor to convey strength, creativity and especially a bold originality. Blue being a color that incites to want to escape, travel and discover, the color aims to stimulate dreams and meditation. It will bring a balance to visually enhance the space without encroaching on the colors of artworks.
The lighting project is at the heart of the concept. Indeed, its rail system allows the space to accompany the constant mutations and hangings of the various artworks. This is a frequent situation in the renewal of the gallery through the different exhibitions. The color of the lighting fixtures is studied to reproduce the colorimetry of the works of art and to allow an intimate and personal atmosphere according to the need.
Throughout this project and it being incredibly close to my heart, I wanted to make this gallery a space for reflection and freedom of thought. Transgressing codes while giving life to a space that can mutate and adapt to all types of exhibitions.
