Where present meets future: turning a present-day ideas laboratory into a meeting place of the future. This project brings together an existing and a newly constructed building through an overarching concept that reflects the company’s innovative character and enthusiam for finding highly individualised answers for the (electric) mobility of tomorrow. The result is an identity-forming environment in which the fascination for technology and the fun of technical play come together.
In the foyer of the existing building, visitors are greeted by bright yellow upholstered seats and shimmering metallic contrasts. Patterned glass walls, inspired by prints used to camouflage automotive prototypes, give the space a digital aura that continues in the new wood panelling, whose milled grooves are reminiscent of punch cards. Chrome-shine lacquered stair stringers shimmer iridescently in green-blue. Scattered around are custom-made, glowing acrylic glass cubes as well as cubes with shiny metallic surfaces that function as exhibition furniture. The lounge area is complemented by a sleek café-bistro and small alcoves for one-on-one talks. On the upper floor, modern conference rooms alternate with areas for presentations and informal meetings.
The design of the second building also radiates a digital-like playfulness, the mix of technical innovation and creative freedom, while adding the conceptual layer: "Off Grid". A term that describes self-sufficiency and individuality. Translated into the space, it stands for collaboration with the utmost flexibility. Whether individual or collaborative projects, meetings, exhibitions or events, the space can be adapted to all kinds of situations. This flexibility is achieved through a range of custom-designed products, including colourful, movable partition walls covered with straps that serve as practical holders but also resemble car seat belts. Another homage to the world of the automobile is the shape of the custom-made, black steel bar tables. The tables themselves can be freely combined so that employees can meet with each other or with customers in ever-changing constellations.
Certainly one of the most striking design elements in the new building is the large wooden staircase with seating, that forms a warm and creative community hub in the midst of the glass walls covered with digital camouflage. Seat cushions in different colours give it a lightness that is further emphasized by the light-toned wood. The milled holes on the sides again recall the design of the foyer - and lead over into what is probably the most spectacular room of the ensemble. In the computer laboratory, screens placed in niches simulate how vehicles act with products developed by the company. Here, the milled holes in the aluminium panels, which are dramatically illuminated from behind, resurface again. Entering this room feels like being inside a supercomputer of the future. Or inside a paradise for engineers of the present.
