BELLOCO, meaning "double the happiness," aims to bring joyful dining experiences to more people. The new location at Ping An Finance Center in Shenzhen, contrasts with previous BELLOCO locations, which are rooted in intimate and bustling street atmospheres. Catering primarily to busy professionals, this new space was looking for a different design approach.

Creating a Community-Like Dining Atmosphere in a Commercial Setting

The design focuses on creating genuine, comfortable and high-quality dining experiences rather than flashy decorations. We emphasize openness and materials with natural textures. Upon entering, guests transition from the sophisticated commercial setting to a lively, community-like atmosphere. The interior isn’t immediately visible from the exterior; instead, visitors pass through a narrow porch that blends with the facade, creating a sense of mystery. Once inside, vibrant music and enthusiastic greetings invite guests to relax and unwind.

Dining in an Art Gallery

“Dining in an art gallery” has always been the spatial dining experience that BELLOCO pursues. This integration presents a challenge due to the fundamental differences between the two. In the process of merging these seemingly conflicting experiences, we continually discuss and balance the compromises between these two atmospheres. Asking questions such as: does a gallery need to be silent? Must there always be a one-meter distance from the artworks? Does a restaurant need to be bustling? By merging these elements, we aim to create a unique space that transcends traditional definitions.

The layout starts with a gallery concept, first ensuring comfortable circulation and strategic placement of artworks. Tables and chairs are arranged around art pieces, maintaining a comfortable distance while meeting dining needs. Lighting follows gallery principles, focusing on art pieces and meticulously plated food. Flexible track lighting in the ceiling allows for adjustments based on artwork positions.

The uncluttered design, with large areas of subtly textured paint, provides ample space for showcasing artworks. Seating close to the artworks allows diners to engage with them, transforming the pieces from mere decor to integral parts of the dining experience.

Maintaining Self-Expression in a Commercial Environment

While this self-expressive approach poses commercial challenges, BELLOCO believes that a strong, unique identity is the most sustainable and compelling strategy. By enhancing the brand’s core values through creating a distinctive blend of dining and art, which also set BELLOCO apart in a competitive market.
