Sui Jianguo is one of the leading figures in the field of sculpture in China’s contemporary art world. For many years, he has taken diversified works as the perspective of social history and explored the changes of Chinese society. His studio and personal art gallery, located in Liqiao Town, Shunyi District, Beijing, is also a historical site to restore the development of China’s contemporary art, recording artists’ responses and practices to the trend of the times.

Designer Lea Chen made full use of the existing light brick block and reinforced concrete structure of the building, making white canvas effect on the light brick block part and keeping the original state of the building on the reinforced concrete part. The design concept of white canvas was used to fully contrast the presentation effect of artwork in the gallery space.

Under the background of urban function renewal in the post-industrial era, the transformation and reuse of architectural space has also become a meaningful topic. Sui Jianguo Art Museum combines the ruggedness of industrial buildings with the aesthetics of exhibition space, giving meaning and value to the transformation of urban buildings into cultural space.
