dix design+architecture and Hongkong Land unveild the latest multi-concept restaurant destination in the heart of Central Hong Kong: Basehall 02. Located in historic Jardine House, Sean Dix reimagined the vernacular architecture and design of traditional gastronomic neighbourhoods across Asia - the vibrant locales that provide opportunities for exploration and discovery, like the fast-disappearing da pai dongs of Hong Kong, the street food markets in every soi of Bangkok, the Shinjuku Golden Gai in Tokyo, and the “I’ve got to try everything” Cisheng Temple area of Taipei.
The vibrant colours and materials were carefully selected to reinforce Basehall 02’s deep connection to old-school Asia. The project incorporates unique elements like special radiused, handmade and fired custom Chinese tile work, textural Japanese hand-chiselled oak panels, custom sculptural breezeblock walls that evoke Southeast Asian Tropical Brutalism, and plush mohair upholstery in colours created especially for the project. Its studied, warm lighting evokes a past era of softly glowing incandescent bulbs and candles. Basehall 02 has interconnected flowing zones: a 1350 m2 higher floor area (within which are distributed two types of kiosk: architectural “Dice” kiosks that slightly overlap down one wall, and central “Island” kiosks with counter seating that are distributed throughout the space) and a 450 m2 multifunctional space on the lower, higher-ceiling level, that can efficiently transform from dining to special events.
For the multifunctional event space, Dix incorporated a stage for live events and performances, a cinema-worthy retractable projection screen, a complete DJ setup, and an elaborate light and sound system, anchored by twinned two-meter high custom horn speakers designed by the renowned Devon Turnbull (of Ojas fame).
“Most guests probably don’t notice many of the details and refinements that go into my projects but they sense them - they just feel right. The different elements all fit together neatly, the edges are smooth, the materials are supple, tactile, intuitive, precise.” - Sean Dix
Sustainability was a key consideration in the project. Sean Dix selected all the materials from local and eco-friendly sources to reduce the project's carbon footprint. The general contractor BSC Group Ltd made every effort to work with the client to reuse and recycle construction waste, as well as use existing Hongkong land materials. In May 2023, Basehall 02 has already achieved WELL v2 Platinum rating. And it is expected to be certified by LEED v4 ID + C and BEAM Plus Interiors v2 (pilot) with the same Platinum rating in this coming June. 2023.
