Ellerman House is a retreat hotel for discerning luxury travelers wanting exclusivity, privacy and exceptional service. The historic Cape Edwardian style mansion has a maximum capacity of 28 guests. Okha's brief was to transform and reactivate the antiquated terrace tavern that overlooks the Atlantic ocean. The existing bar was a dark, dreary, inhospitable environment that guests chose to avoid. The space felt cramped, congested and bleak, giving little or no outlook onto the terrace and the magnificent ocean views. Part of the brief was to ensure that the transformation allowed the bar to be used both day and night and that it created a working synergy with the expansive outdoor terrace area, again both day and night. Given Ellerman House's predominantly classical character and its clientelle; the bar needed to feel an intrinsic part of the existing hotel whilst being a progressive, transportive place with emotive power, romance and a lived in, accessible sense of luxury and sophistication. It needed to be a space that would allow guests to unplug and reconnect either solo or socially.
