Luminous Architecture as an artistic concept is almost a century old. It dates back to 1926, when German Scientist Joachim Teichmüller separated mere illumination from light design. This coincided with the first Light Art project by the famous Hungarian artist and Bauhaus-teacher Lázló Moholy-Nagy (Licht-Raum-Modulator, 1920–1930).
When light becomes a true part of architecture (or art for that matter) our perception changes, we switch to our right brain and start experiencing space, color, details and their emotional messages. We begin to see. In this project one perceives three bright red aluminum angles framing the metal clad and glass siding of the AVENTUS headquarters in Warendorf, Germany.
The lit sides of these angles are more than strictly illumination. It structures and accentuates these elements so they never dissolve with the reciding light of day. But even in broad daylight they conitnue to shine and communicate. In 2020 Robert Ward, founder of Award Associates (Studio for exhibition and spacial design), had the rare opportunity to design not only the company logo, Lobby, orientation signage and even the industrial design of the machine housing, but also architectural accents and lighting.
The realization process of these architectural accents was accompanied by architect Thomas Spangemacher. The eye-catcher is definitely the towering bright red angel located on the side of the administration building. It camouflages the escape stairs with a sculptural almost monumental statement. From there the view travels to the next red angle over the entrance portal and on to the third angle framing the connecting production building.
Except for the comparatively discrete company´s logo in white there are no other ccents to distract our view. The red angles attract and focus the attention, yet at the same time they correspond with the various geometric elements of the glass and metal surface of the building complex. They are minimalistic yet highly emotional, strong and vivid. Another distinct design element is the three dimensional object introducing the Company logo situated between the building and the parking area.
It shows the capital V and two floating circles above it, symbolizing the fusion of two companies and a funneling of material into bags: AVENTUS produces bagging technology for granules. All architectural and design elements are mirrored in the interior design of the entrance hall: the red angle, indirect lighting of the company logo, the company´s claim projected in white light letters on the wall. Light as a creative source and communicating medium.
