In 2016, Vornado Realty Trust began to explore the possibility of projecting video art on theMart’s nearly three-acre façade facing the Chicago River. Their idea was to make this a permanent installation, that would soon become the largest permanent projection in the world. Because everything would have to operate with the utmost precision, VDT was brought on to bring this project to fruition. The projector room features 34 Christie Digital Boxer 4K30 30,000 lumen projectors for a total of nearly 1 million lumens projected on the building facade, and the custom steel structure is thick enough to support the projectors, each of which weighs 300 pounds, and also eliminate any potential for vibration. Its minimal rectangular shape cantilevers above the walkway, leaving its top face neatly tucked below the balustrade on Upper Wacker Drive, and on the second floor, the projectors (while also remotely operable) are stacked on custom moveable steel frames that slide back to allow maintenance personnel to access the area. Art on theMART officially launched with a grand opening ceremony on the evening of September 29, 2018, and featured original content from Obscura’s media team and curated artists. The event was attended by over 30,000 people and garnered national media attention.
