This is the design of a coffee shop planned for Manila, Philippines. As the first store in the Philippines for % Arabica, which operates cafes all over the world, we created a futuristic space symbolizing the future of Manila, a city that continues to noticeably develop, standing out even in the economically growing Asian region. Since the site has an elongated corridor-like shape extending toward the back, we installed a glass-enclosed roasting room near the shop entrance to serve as a landmark and draw passersby into the store. This layout effectively expresses the brand’s identity while creating a lively atmosphere that spills out of the store.

Additionally, by installing a kitchen-like counter and high counter seats aligned with the narrow space extending toward the back of the store, customers are further enticed deeper into the space. The site has a gentle curve that follows the shape of the building, so we designed the cafe counter in the form of a cubic curved surface to match the curve of the building while reflecting the surrounding scenery.

Designed with 3D modeling, the cafe counter was constructed by local sheet metal craftspersons, realizing a collaborative effort utilizing local sheet metalworking techniques that have evolved in step with the region’s economic development. The cubic curved shape was created via the advanced skills of local craftspersons, and it plays a symbolic role within the entire space. This combination of CAD technology and traditional local craftsmanship created a truly unique space.

To complement the distinctive shape of the kitchen counter, stainless steel panels were used on the floor and walls to give the entire space a dull, reflective finish. Additionally, by covering the entire ceiling with a light curtain, brightness that makes the kitchen counter appear to float while illuminating the entire store is simultaneously achieved. This, combined with the three-dimensional shape of the cafe counter, creates a futuristic space reminiscent of a spaceship interior and hints at Manila’s not-too-distant future.
