Interior Design of % ARABICA, the 14th store in Kuwait, located slightly inland from the eastern coast in an area where residential and commercial areas coexist. With a floor plan of 163 sqm for the first floor, 105 sqm for the second floor, and a terrace of 90 sqm, the first floor is divided into two halves, with a bar counter and roasting room on one side and seating for customers on the other side.
The second floor is planned to have indoor seating and terrace seating, each occupying half of the space. By constructing the same elements from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor and even the terrace seats, we aimed to create a sense of unity and connection between the floors and between the indoor and outdoor areas, which are usually divided.
From the exterior to the interior, we seamlessly connected them using white, which is the master color symbolizing % ARABICA, and the canvas for vibrant colors. We meticulously arranged 17 assorted-color partitions as if painting on a pure white canvas.
These partitions were constructed in a circular shape with % as the motif, and we selected yellow, which harmonizes with % ARABICA's elements such as jute bags and brass. By using semi-transparent yellow film, the colors overlap in multiple layers. This gradient effect emphasizes spatial depth and brings about visual changes. In the void space of the staircase area, we covered the entire surface with mirrors, allowing the same view to be reflected regardless of which floor one is on, thereby emphasizing the unity between the first and second floors. Furthermore, on the second floor, the circular partitions contrast with the triangular architectural shape, and the yellow color contrasts with the blue sky as the background of the terrace, creating a contrast that adds further character to this store.
Considering the unique Middle Eastern tradition, these partitions were designed where unmarried men and women do not sit together. While gently dividing the seating areas, we ensured that individuals were not concerned about each other's presence. Thus, the space becomes comfortable while being mindful of the connection between each floor and the interior and exterior.
