When we were asked to design the new Antonio Lupi showroom, our attention was mainly focused on the particular shape of the space, located at the base of an elegant tower in the heart of Milan, built in the fifties with the recommendations of the architect Portaluppi. It is a showroom with fourteen windows that from via Porta Tenaglia extend up to look out onto the greenery of Parco Sempione. We decided to work by inserting a ceiling of great visual impact, composed of irregular vaults that contribute to create a sense of depth to a space that develops mainly in length. The particular design, in addition to suggesting a sequence of bathrooms, is designed to be admired from outside and to have a great visual impact at night. As it sometimes happens, this project is also born from the observation of the work of a great master: in this case the inspiration comes from the Kılıç Ali Paşa baths in Istanbul, designed by Sinān, a famous Ottoman architect of the sixteenth century. In this project dedicated to the bathroom, attention has focused on the upper part of the architecture, leaving greater freedom to the floor level where the products are exposed. Finally we focused on the tactility of the surfaces, and we wanted to contrast the roughness of the walls covered in cement resin, the softness of the wood of the staircase leading to the lower level and especially the irregular grain of the Ceppo di Grè floor, typical stone of Milan.
