Aesop Las Salesas by Ciszak Dalmas and Matteo Ferrari is a retail space situated in Las Salesas district of Madrid, Spain. Commissioned by Aesop, the project is the second collaboration between the design team and the brand in Madrid, with both stores offering complementary yet distinct interpretations of Aesop’s brand within the city.
In dialogue with the ornate splendor of the adjacent Palacio de Longoria, an icon of Spanish Art Nouveau, the store’s design integrates seamlessly into the historic fabric of the neighborhood, echoing the elegance and rhythm of surrounding architecture while asserting a contemporary identity.
The interior concept draws deeply from Spanish Modernism, most notably through the revival of the “Trencadís” technique. This distinctive mosaic, composed entirely of irregular ceramic fragments, emerges as a defining visual and tactile element. The interplay of materiality and light is central to the store’s atmosphere. Sleek free-standing sinks, with tops crafted from the typical Spanish Silvestre Granito and bases constructed from thin glass and the Alpi Walnut Burl wood, enhance the store's light-filled ambiance, seeming to float without support. When entering the space visitors also encounter a dynamic choreography of light and shadow, mediated by the use of “Catedral” glass. This hammered, translucent glass diffuses sunlight to create a subdued, contemplative ambiance. These elements, appearing to hover effortlessly, heighten the sense of spatial weightlessness and luminosity.
At the rear, a transparent portico functions as both architectural centrepiece and threshold, offering glimpses into both the public-facing and operational zones of the store. Walls rendered in fine-grain clay plaster and the use of warm wood veneer further define the interiors, cultivating a balance between openness and intimacy. The space also displays two separate art pieces, “Bodegón” an oil over canvas by Jordi Bernaus and “Wall Reliefs” made from concrete with a terra cotta/chamotte clay finish by Roger Desserprit. Both pieces depict raw scenes involving objects as the main subjects, in different but traditional mediums within the realm of the visual arts.
Together, all these elements establish a space that is at once rooted in context and transcendent in experience, an embodiment of material innovation, historical resonance, and architectural poise.
