This is an exhibition that presents the clothes-making approach of IM MEN, the men’s brand of ISSEY MIYAKE. TAKT PROJECT curated the entire exhibition, from the concept development to the installation, text, sound, and visual design, in dialogue with the IM MEN design team.
The concept of “A Piece of Cloth and One Line” was developed through discussions with the IM MEN design team. As is widely known, this global brand has the concept of “A Piece of Cloth,” and we modestly added the phrase “One Line” to it.
A piece of cloth consists of only one surface, yet the material’s flexibility transforms it into a versatile, three-dimensional one that twists and curves freely. A piece of cloth means a presence with freedom. By folding, cutting, and connecting via a single drawn line, this single piece of cloth transforms into any multifaceted figure, creating a multifaceted and diverse range of clothing.
From such a perspective, we viewed IM MEN’s design as “drawing a line onto a piece of cloth.” We interpreted that this is why the new design by IM MEN resonates with our multifaceted everyday life, and IM MEN clothing is like drawing a new line over ordinary living.
To materialize a space under this concept, laser levels—a tool familiar to architects and interior designers used on construction sites—were employed as the main “component” of the space.
A large piece of cloth was simply hung in the space, and a single line of light was emitted from a vertically moving laser level at the center.
A single line of light renders diverse luminous expressions on the large hanging cloth, staging different scenes in front of our eyes, as if to symbolize IM MEN’s clothes-making. The line of light shines through the cloth and traces the uneven contour of the surroundings, presenting a new face at each moment that is different from that of the familiar space, as if resonating with the light on the cloth.
The universal clothes-making that IM MEN seeks in fact lies in such multifaceted faces hidden in our ordinary world. This exhibition presents the clothes-making approach of IM MEN to the multifaceted nature of ordinary living.
In this exhibition, we simply arranged an uncut roll of fabric in an arc shape, which hardly required any construction work, yet it produced an endless variety of expressions. The fabric can be easily retrieved and reused after the exhibition. This space design is highly portable with less waste materials, and is highly economical as well.
