'A better place. 401' is a residential living brand located in Jongno, the city centre of Seoul. Like most other urban centers, social issues caused by gentrification can be seen in this area as well. For instance, it is challenging to rent out on the third floor and above compared to the first and second floors. After many years of research and analysis of the high vacancy issue of the upper floors, we have planned a new business-type living space design for the third, fourth floors and above, where rent is relatively lower, as a project to overcome the commercial downturn of this region. In consideration of scalability of the project, the design was executed based on the average dimensions that many buildings use as standard. We designed most of the furniture and products in the space. The modular wall, which is one of the key elements of the project, is designed with a total of 9 different functions to give the wall new rolls, and experiment the relationship with the user behaviour. By repeating the considered spatial dimensions and colours, we pursued creation of an indoor design brand that transcends trendiness and the type. These modules with nine different functions perfectly meet the needs of living today, from simple storage to electrical outlets, kitchen ventilators, electronic charging solutions, lightings, switches, HDMI, and other connectivity solutions. As it is extremely easy to install and disassemble, users can freely customise the modules according to their needs and preference. Thanks to the use of aluminum, which is a sustainable and super light material, modules can be easily transported and installed by one adult. The beauty of the modules is that unnecessary lines and devices can be embedded (hidden) inside the wall, thereby offering a neat first impression when entering the space. On the other hand, inside of the wall manifests a person’s lifestyle. Users can easily see everything at a glance and no need to spend time on looking for anything. We have focused on the elements that are important to us today, but not yet the main challenges, and focused on addressing these issues to create a better living environment for tomorrow.
