Client Loft and interior designer Jo Nagazaka asked DUS to explore the novel technique of 3D printing and create 5 bespoke 3D printed ‘settings’ in Loft’s Flagship store in Ginza. DUS was driven by the aim to discover the craft of 3D printing beyond its familiar aesthetic. Main protagonist of the printing technology is the print material, in this case plastic. The printing was done with a special material, a plant-based plastic made of linseed, which DUS developed together with material Multinational Henkel. Special characteristic of the material is its soft appearance, strong colours and strong adhesion, allowing for a high level of curves and detail. In this project, the material behaviour was investigated by exploring difficult three-dimensional geometries, thus maxing the adhesiveness of the bio-plastic. Also combinations with other materials such as epoxy, concrete, marble terrazzo, and wood were tested to great extend. Each combination led to its very own aesthetic and offers material prototypes for further explorations.
