Surrounding a library of cars with racing history, The Lantern embodies the mechanical and emotive nature of automobiles. Structurally, we took reference from car headlamps, which were first introduced in the 1880s as Carbide Lanterns, ultimately giving our design its name. The Lantern adapts to two usages - portable lamp and wall lamp. Light properties can be flexibly adjusted through a hybrid dimming mechanism and changeable glass fins. Users can control the atmosphere simply by gyrating the body or manipulating the metal blades. It imbues the interior with calculated cosiness, and offers an effortless switch between moods. The design’s goal of modular, efficient and intuitive lighting is taken to the extreme. Adaptable System: A composite of modules allows the lamp to serve two systems. A wall lamp when mounted to wall brackets and a portable lamp without, The Lantern endows flexibility and efficiency in production. The former can be fitted onto a shelving framework, and freely configured on the grid. Its portability makes it ideal for use as a desk reading light or coffee table luminaire. Analogue Dimming: The Lantern is engineered with a technological core, but it also has a familiar, tactile appeal. It draws on a hybrid dimming mechanism that blurs the line between analogue and digital. By physically moving the metal blades, users can dim and control the light as desired. Gyro System: Alternatively, The Lantern uses an innovative way to dim the light. A gyroscope is embedded to detect angular velocity and facilitate adjustable light temperature. By rotating the portable lamp clockwise, brightness intensifies, and vice versa, creating a sonorous or rarefied allure depending on the needs of the environment and users. Changeable Glass Fins: A glass cylinder is formed by fins that fan out from the central tube, which mimic beams dispersed from a headlamp. These fins, made from clear, amber or sandblasted opal glass, diffuse light to produce a bright, tinted or milky translucent effect, populating the room with a wonderful glow. By changing to a different set of glass fins, users can alter the hue and diffusion of light and hence, the atmosphere. Power and Charging: The wall lamp is powered automatically once affixed to the magnetic tracks, while the portable lamp utilises USB-plugged inductive chargers, meeting the level of convenience expected in modernity. Our goal is to create lighting that expresses the quest for mechanical perfection and craftsmanship in car-making, and above all, a product that improves people’s life. We experimented with materials and forms in automotive design, and attempted to solve real-life problems by connecting analogue methods and technological innovation. Every possibility to maximise versatility was studied, and translated across as an intuitive design. Thorough down to the last detail, The Lantern was crafted for those that value usefulness and authenticity in everyday life.
