Studiopepe's design philosophy is based on extensive iconographic research and a conceptual approach to objects, giving a rich context to everything it does. Its penchant for symbolism is apparent in its 'Shibari' armchair designed for Visionnaire and named after the Japanese word for 'binding'. Across history, the knot has had many different meanings, including sacred and religious symbolism,' explain Studiopepe co-founders Arianna Lelli Mami and Chiara Di Pinto. 'In Egypt, it represented life, while the endless knot is one of the most ancient motifs used in Buddhist symbolism'.

The pair are also keen to point out that it is used as a symbol of enduring love: 'it is not a noose, nor a restraint, but an intertwined connection.' Studiopepe's own take on the knot motif appears on the backrest of the Shibari armchair, upholstered in "'Paddington', a recycled fabric made from fleece.
