The Peel Chair takes inspiration from the natural phenomena of bark peeling from trees, as well the iconic and timeless plywood furniture of modernist Marcel Breuer.
Peel’s design plays into the illusion that it is constructed from a singular sheet of formed plywood that has been peeled back and folded into shape. The backrest, legs and seat pan come together via seamless contact points to create an aesthetically pleasing continuous line through the side profile.
We were drawn to plywood as a low-cost material that can be sustainably sourced and manufactured in a way that significantly reduces wood wastage in comparison to traditional lumber practices.
Early in the design process, we created a rough prototype from CNC-machined MDF layers stacked together. This gave us a solid sense of the design proportions and ergonomics of the chair, helping us to refine and finesse the design.
Peel Chair is a versatile addition to homes, offices and other public spaces with a striking sculptural geometry and to its repeating form whilst stacked.
Our vision for the Peel Chair has been realised, crafted and documented during its manufacture of a small sample run in Hungary (March 2023).
Peel Chair is made from just two simple moulded plywood parts — a seat and a frame. Thin birch veneers are arranged cross-grain, glued and pressed with a European Oak veneer finish using a large hydraulic press. This wood lamination manufacturing technique makes the chair extremely hard-wearing, with its longevity supported by the simple joinery method using dowel pins.
To champion our sustainable design principles and highlight the simplicity of Peel Chair's form, we created Offcut Table from the negative material from the Peel Chair's moulding process. Each manufactured Peel Chair has an accompanying negative offcut. So, by creating Offcut Table, we are highlighting the potential to eliminate production waste by creating two products from a single process.
