INNOVATION: MUTE (full title "Mute: The Vanishing Half") is a collectible series of optically skewed furniture. The design is innovative in three aspects: form, proximity, and objective consciousness. MUTE is designed to convey the intrinsic nature of interaction, be it interpersonal or objective. The chair exists on and off depending on the angle and amount of brightness and consequently the reflections and refractions. MUTE is designed to disappear intrinsically to avoid the subconscious intrusion into a spare space when unnecessary. This concept offers users more controllable perspectives when it comes to their feelings and perceptions of a private living space. When the space is occupied with full activities which come along with lighting, objects, subjects, sounds, and more bounce-back-beings, MUTE exists more vividly because of the better interaction it receives and responds to. When the space needs to be dissociated from the objective and subjective natures, MUTE performs as a natively grown emblem perceptibly.
CREATIVITY: MUTE defines proximity with a rather creative method as in the optical illusion effect. Manifesting through the choices of material, shapes, and layouts, the optical illusion effect attributes uniqueness to its simple outlook and realizes multiple statuses when the chair is placed in different ways. A single chair displays distinct creativeness compared to the pair, while the pair performs more as the complementary of each other, echoing the title of the design as the filler of the vanishing half.
FUNCTIONALITY: The design conforms to functionality in two aspects: usability and interaction. For usability, the chair is very comfortable to sit on from whichever side and is easy to lift and store. For interaction, as INNOVATION mentioned, MUTE is designed to consider the use from a human-centric point of view – it does not bother the space and the user when unnecessary, and the fundamental existence of the design is flexible and fully decided by the user.
SUSTAINABILITY: MUTE is sustainable for social, economic, and environmental wellbeing due to the selection of craftsmanship, materials, and minimal production. This collection is collectible and will not be mass produced as in the original designs. The collection holds extremely limited editions, the sustainability is not at risk from whichever perspectives, especially because of the mechanics of a standard production of collection design which is naturally gentler than mass volumes production. The manufacturing process is naturally waste-free for the selection of exquisite craftsmanship, and glass was selected instead of acrylic for the consideration of being more environmentally friendly. The limitation of production is designed to convey ecological sustainability for society, economy and environment. Comprehensively, the studio believes in minimal production, the content and spirit of a design shall then be conveyed and used through simpler existence.
