Kumoo is an experiential communication tool designed for schools transitioning toward education that fosters creativity and autonomy. Its name derives from the Japanese word "kumou" (meaning "let's build together"), reflecting the values of collaboration, play, and co-creation.

The innovation of Kumoo lies in its two-step approach that transforms spatial learning. Children begin by testing ideas using 1:10 scale wooden models, similar to building blocks. They then construct full-scale spaces using modular wooden units—Panels, Bases, and Joints—that can be freely assembled without tools. This step-by-step process allows children to transform abstract ideas into tangible spaces, encouraging them to take an active role in spatial design.

In terms of functionality, Kumoo’s modular system is intuitive and requires no tools or specialized knowledge, making it accessible to people of all ages and experience levels. It encourages students to think spatially, make decisions, and collaborate with others, positioning them not as passive users of space but as active designers. This process enhances critical thinking, communication, and collaborative skills which are core competencies in modern education.

In many Japanese schools, traditional fixed desks and partitions dominate the classroom environment, often limiting children’s imagination and curiosity. Kumoo empowers children to create their own open, transformable learning environments, fostering creative learning through hands-on experimentation and sensory engagement.

Kumoo is also designed with sustainability and social impact in mind. By repurposing offcuts and scrap wood from local timber industries located near schools, it helps reduce waste and provides children with opportunities to learn about the diversity of local wood and processing techniques. This initiative not only supports environmental education but also fosters social learning by sparking interest in local industries and craftsmanship.

Kumoo offers a vision to reimagine the school environment as a co-created, continuously evolving space. It empowers children to take an active role in shaping their own learning environments by hand, while strengthening their connections with classmates and the wider community. By turning users into creators, Kumoo provides a concrete solution to the challenge of fostering creativity in education.
