Camping at home: reading comfort by JDE Design Driven Consultancy + CACAO

What are the object’s characteristics, designed for the comfort and pleasure of reading? It is GRAMA, a collection consisting of a lounge chair, a stool, and a floor lamp. This collection is a collaboration between CACAO, Jorge Diego Etienne and JDE Design Driven Consultancy.

Starting from this concern, JDE conducted extensive research on rest, reading and quiet spaces. References were then identified with organic and asymmetrical enveloping volumes, along with contrasting materials with obvious joints.

To design a reading corner at home in the face of the hustle and bustle of everyday life is to bring the stillness of nature indoors with a proposal of sober furniture that integrates elements such as storage bags and multipurpose extremities in its composition. It also includes soft and comfortable materials for an unforgettable experience. Thus, the design guideline and theme for this collection was called: “Camping at Home”.

The design acquires a more comfortable, versatile, organic, and visually light sense. These pieces were created for people to build their own sanctuary and enjoy their own company. In this way, the collection provides spaces for reflection within residential or communal environments. Therefore, there is an emphasis on comfort and warmth in both its form and function.

The lounge chair and stool feature a refined metal frame that elegantly embraces the main body of the upholstered shell. Complemented by an ultra-comfortable textured cushion, this piece adapts to the user's figure, ensuring comfort during their lounging experience. Within a palette of iconic colors, monochromatic options are offered that perfectly harmonize the union of the metal structure with the upholstered body, giving a look of refined balance.

The floor lamp features an integrated cord winder attachment and incorporates touch sensors on the metal body for easy on/off switching. At the top, it includes a sleek angled steel component that allows the direction of light to be adjusted.

The collection features eight finish options for the chair and stool, and four options for the floor lamp. In addition, there’s a special edition featuring vegan polymer, commercially known as Desserto® vegan prickly pear cactus leather. This material offers the same high-end tactile and aesthetic feel and durability. This collection also marks the first time CACAO has ventured into upholstered furniture. As part of the project, JDE acted as consultants to guide them into this new category of finishes for the brand.
