The Extra Extra Large Magma is a 3-meter long lighting sculpture that showcases EWE Studio’s expertise in blending materials and techniques. Inspired by the changing shape of lava and paying homage to the rugged and ever-changing Mexican terrain, it shows deference to Mexico’s unique geological complexity. Magmas are produced in partnership with Nouvel, a renowned glass manufacturer in Mexico City, and combine glass and metal to create a series of lamps with a distinct atmospheric sensation. The piece is part of the ‘Alquimia Collection’, which aims to fuse materiality and the expertise of different Mexican craft workshops; it directly alludes to the practice of alchemy and fire as a transformative element.

Glass is made from raw materials such as sand and silica which melt at extremely high temperatures, creating a viscous material similar to lava. The bubbles are carefully blown into volcanic stone molds. Also known as ‘recinto’ this material has excellent heat resistance properties and is abundant in Mexico, a result of the volcanic activity in the area and product of the changing natural landscape. The molds are meticulously carved by local stonemasons using chisels and hammers which result in distinctive marks and scars on the inner surfaces. When the glass bubbles are blown into the molds, they replicate the rough and porous texture of the stone and the visible traces of the tools involved in the making. Custom metal structures are then crafted specifically for each lighting sculpture, containing a hand-hammered brass surface that casts subtle reflections.

The Magma Lighting Fixture emits a perimetral light that bathes a space in a soft aura. The light is fully dimmable, making it an adaptable lighting source. The piece consists of 21 bubbles, offering a range of variations and configurations that can be mounted on walls, floors, or ceilings.
