After completing an MFA in Interdisciplinary Design from California College of the Arts, teaching graphic design at the college level and working for a variety of nationally recognized clients, Dan became passionate about design in the third dimension, with wood and glass in particular. This product line is the culmination of years focused on the reimagining of task and accent lights for interior spaces. Each piece in the 5 lamp series challenges existing conceptions of the, “table lamp” and helps to transform a space with a very unique illuminated object. They are a confluence of fine woodworking and beautiful hand blown or flat glass. The pieces are original and inspired by everything from architecture to poetry and are informed by vocabularies from the Arts and Crafts and Art Deco periods. After sampling many woods, wood finishes and conversations with woodshops, Dan settled on using only three species to produce all his pieces: cherry, walnut, and maple. He chose them not only because they provide the perfect tonal contrasts, but because each is domestically produced, sustainable and renewable. All Stone and Dove lamps use non-hazardous finishes that do not off gas VOCs into the air. Everything is produced by local wood shops in the Baltimore area. The majority of the packaging is done with 100% biodegradable foam. In an age of sophisticated electronics and proprietary LEDs, Dan chose to use only medium base sockets and classic rotary dimmers. The simple and traditional components not only create the most bulb choices for the consumer, but they are also in keeping with the timeless aesthetic of the pieces.
