Studio Samira Boon was commissioned by RDAI and Hermes to design and produce a site-specific artistic facade that enhances the sense of aesthetic, as well as intimacy, for the Hermès Taikoo Li Qiantan store in Shanghai. The installation of the three-dimensional textiles regulates the climate by magically filtering the light and creates a sophisticated atmosphere that expresses the brand's exclusive style.
Composed of only two contrasting yarns, a soft, matt off–white opaque and stiff, transparent, and shiny yarn, the facade becomes progressively transparent towards the sky to let natural daylight in. At eye level the gradient of denser weavings and folds mantles the clients in serene privacy.
The three-dimensional structure is created by translating traditional origami patterns into parametric designs, being produced by very innovative weaving techniques. This advanced production process generates unique and innovate qualities: complex folding patterns are implemented straight into the fabrics. This results into one of a kind textile DNA (compositions and structures), each screen is different, in sequence they create a soft dancing landscape.
The Archi Folds Textile Facade magically filters the natural daylight and reflects the incoming light playfully around the space because of its alternating matte, shiny, opaque and translucent angled surfaces. Light and shadow constantly change the perception of the 3D-folded facets and surfaces, showing a random yet mathematically calculated pattern. This liveliness changes customers spatial experience. Due to the tree-dimensional structure, also other functional aspects, such as acoustics are improved considerably.
The reflective properties of the 3D-facets block direct sunlight thus saving energy in a natural way. This simulates a process found in nature. Origami patterns, like the one applied in this textile facade, can be interpreted as abstract mathematical translations of shapes and structures, like the ones we find in plants. The 3D textile installation embodies the growth and dynamism that takes place in nature. Simulating processes found in nature, this flexible and adaptive interior textile facade can accommodate and regulate sunlight, efficient energy usage, and acoustic ambience.
