Embodying a creation that evolves with the times and the social context
A series of reclaimed furniture is designed for the largest shop of Maison Special in Kansai region of Japan. By deconstructing/reinterpreting Maison Special's brand concept of "SPECIAL IS YOUR STANDARD", the interior concept of the space was created to question the ordinary daily life that we take for granted, to turn the ordinary and the extraordinary upside down, and to allow us to see the extraordinary (SPECIAL) in the ordinary daily life (STANDARD).
As a response to our interior concept as well as brand’s concept, we decided to take another look at the way things are made.
We have explored factories and mills to highlight overlooked off-cut materials and material stocks waiting to be discarded. Engaging in a dialogue with materials we came across by chance led us to weaved new stories by combining this chance encounters. Then these reclaimed furniture give a uniqueness to the shop and a synergy with Maison Special’s clothes.
However, this is just another page in the history of these materials, and the next story will be spun again. This idea and practice have become our foundation. We would like to continue to create this process of connection with community and society and link it to a circular economy society. This approach will reach embodying a creation that evolves with the times and the social context.
A collection of materials that would otherwise be discarded, separated from their original
purpose and function, and reconstructed as elements of interior design. Each piece has its
own story and is given a new role to shine.
- Stone scraps that are regularly thrown away by stonemason in Gifu turned into fixtures.
- Wooden building materials used in 1957 from the demolition site by carpenter in Toyama
turned into fixtures.
- Wood thinned to protect the forest by lumberyard in Saitama, turned into an art piece.
- Samples from various tile manufacturers and sample tiles accumulated in design offices
turned into table tops.
