A Christmas Tree that Lives On
Each year, more than 60 million Christmas trees are wasted and this Christmas, EDITECTURE’s vision was to create a Christmas tree that will live on. EDITECTURE is proud to announce the launch of the first ever upcycled bespoke Christmas tree at The Upper House in December 2022, focusing on sustainability at its core. Each year, more than 60 million Christmas trees are wasted and this Christmas, EDITECTURE’s vision was to create a Christmas tree that will live on.

EDITECTURE has made history by creating a one-of-a-kind tree that transforms into 21 pieces of furniture, making it the first ever Christmas tree that is 0% wastage, 100% reusable and 100% using recyclable materials - including the structure and components itself. It contains a total of 7 layers; each layer carefully designed to be reconfigured into furniture sets that comprises of biodegradable materials sourced from 38,600 recycled plastic bottles at The Upper House and the upcycled materials from EDITECTURE. The furniture sets include 1 star light, 5 side tables, 2 lamp shades, 4 stools, 1 large table and 8 chairs.

Each piece is printed using the biggest upcycling 3D printer at inhouse [RE] EDIT LAB in Hong Kong that EDITECTURE has brought in to expand their sustainability focus in their designs. The upcycling printer is able to print up to 1m x 1.2m upcycled plastic printing. With innovation and technology, wastage is reduced during sampling whilst R&D processes can be monitored in minutes.

In Hong Kong, there are many underprivileged families who couldn’t afford purchasing furniture for their limited-space flats. Majority of the children from the underprivileged families don’t get to celebrate Christmas and tend not to have sufficient space and furniture to complete their school work. We continue to live by our principles which sustainability and giving back to the society have remained as the core values that drive our design studio. The idea of “A Christmas Tree that Lives on” was born to lend a hand to those in need, taking the opportunity to educate and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas - “of sharing joy with the wider community”, this one-of-a-kind Christmas tree was available for auction with all proceeds benefitting a charity organisation which supports underprivileged families living in subdivided flats.

“I hope our fully transformable and upcycled Christmas Tree for The Upper House will inspire other creators, and share an important message with our community. A tree can be more than just a tree. It can stretch beyond your own circle, and spread love to other people”, said Jacqueline Chak, co-founders of EDITECTURE.
