The Space Program by Foreign Policy Design

BOOKMARK ARTICLE

A pop-up concept in Singapore is part installation, part museum and part retail shop.

The Space Program is an initiative seeking to activate a stronger connection between visitors and space, creating a new level of experience. The idea was implemented earlier this month at the New Majestic Hotel in Singapore, where it has popped up in the lobby.

‘The philosophy of the concept is based on the intersection of design, intellect and contemporary culture,’ says Yah-Leng Yu of Foreign Policy Design. ‘It’s a global concept where spaces are re-expressed and therefore create a new experience for the user.’

Visitors are faced with a number of options: shop for locally-crafted products, sip a coffee, browse the installation-like displays, roam the gallery. Ultimately, The Space Program offers a glimpse into Singapore life.

‘We want to connect with [modern travelers] more than a stay in a hotel room with 400 thread-count sheets – you soon forget that,’ says Loh Lik Peng, owner of New Majestic Hotel.  ‘If you come into a hotel and feel a genuine connection with the city’s own cultural values, that’s something that lasts a lot longer.’
