Marcus Keichel of German design duo Läufer + Keichel talks about the ideas and inspiration behind Satsuma, a new lightweight chair design for Schneiderschram.
What was the inspiration for Satsuma?
Satsuma was inspired by the intelligent design and weight-saving properties of traditional fruit boxes. Take, for example, the triangular corner pieces of those boxes, which are roughly half the weight of square pieces, while providing just as much stability. This led us to experiment with triangular chair legs.
What technologies enabled the chair’s production?
Satsuma is a real industrial-design product. Because of the chair’s geometric complexity, all components are manufactured and finished using modern CNC milling technology.
How does the finished product differ from other chairs?
First of all, its weight. Each Satsuma chair weighs just 3.5 kg. Second, its seat comfort. The extra thin plywood seat and backrest provide excellent flexibility. Last but not least, its unconventional und unpretentious appearance.
