This week's curation of design-led retail and hospitality openings spans from a buzzy private club in the US capital to a serene resort on a small Japanese island.
PLEATS PLEASE / BAO BAO ISSEY MIYAKE
Moment Inc.
Japanese studio Moment Inc. took on Issey Miyake’s Pleats Please and Bao Bao store in expansive Chinese shopping mall Hangzhou Tower. The designers reinterpreted motifs from the building’s exterior for the shop, creating a play of light and shadow with the monochromatic, planar use of aluminium and translucent polycarbonate.
Location: 2F, Tower C, Hangzhou Tower, No.1 Wulin Square, Xiacheng District, Hangzhou
NED’S CLUB
Stonehill Taylor, Soho House Design
Ned’s, a social club with locations in NYC, Doha and London, is extending its reach with a new venue in Washington D.C. Stonehill Taylor and Soho House Design referenced the Art Deco and neoclassical periods – as well as former White House eras – in creating the interiors, honouring the club’s situation in the US capital’s historic Walker and American Security Bank buildings.
Location: 734 15th St NW, Washington, DC 20005, United States
ROSEWOOD MIYAKOJIMA
Studio Piet Boon
Overlooking the coast on Japan’s Miyako Island, Rosewood Miyakojima is a resort with design heavily inspired by Ryukyu culture and its surrounding land-and sea-scapes. Studio Piet Boon used a range of local materials and embraced organic textures in creating the Rosewood property’s interior spaces, which include 55 guest accommodations, a spa, F&B venues and more.

The newly opened Palazzina Sunnei incorporates design elements seen in its fashion shows – like a massive multicolour-striped CC-Tapis carpet – to enliven the minimalistic interior.
