BOOKMARK ARTICLE

Every week we highlight those submissions which have been frequented by our readers and jury, in the lead-up to the reveal of Interiors of the Month winners and honourable mentions. Here are the five most-viewed projects between 2 and 9 June 2023.

SALMON EYE

Kvorning Design

The floating aquaculture visitor and information centre in Hardangerfjord, Norway, Salmon Eye, was designed by Kvorning Design (Exhibition, 7.58). The ellipsoid-shaped building is covered in 9,500 stainless steel scales. The 650-sq-m space includes a cinema, experience space, office area and fine-dining restaurant, and is connected to the nearby fish farming site. The floating centre is accessible by two small electrical ferries. ‘This is definitely a never-before-seen concept coming to reality,’ says Sanchit Arora, principal architect at Renesa Studio.

SUPER SEED CONCEPT STORE

F.O.G. Architecture

For plant-based skincare brand Super Seed, F.O.G. Architecture designed a 300-sq-m store Shanghai (Single-Brand Store, 8.01). A product display system made of 168 moveable semi-transparent acrylic boxes, allows the store to constantly adapt. Five adjacent ‘lab’ spaces allow customers to test products. ‘A playful and modernist space with flexibility and a nice contrast with plants,’ says Tugba Okcuoglu, creative concept and customer experience developer at Ingka Centers.

RIPPLE

Takatoku Nishi Phenomena Construction Studio

Ripple is a space for meditation and contemplation in Tokyo, designed by Takatoku Nishi Phenomena Construction Studio as the lead designer’s PhD graduation project (Light, 5.13). Rows of vertical wood beams form either wall, which meet at the top as a pinnacle. Hanging tube-shaped lights are suspended from the centre of the ceiling while string lights are strung between the wooden panels. Openings on either side allow natural light in, changing the user’s experience throughout the day.

WAVING SPACE

Linjian Design Studio

Waving Space is a shop for men’s custom clothes in Oriental Water City, Zhongshan District, Dalian (Single-Brand Store, 6.60). Linjian Design Studio drew inspiration from the surrounding seashore by incorporating 3D wave shapes on the walls and display racks as well as the floor patterns. A muted grey-scale colour palette emphasizes the colourful clothes on display. ‘It is a very well-designed, high-quality retail space which highlights the clothes and creates curiosity among the consumer. A good example of holistic design,’ says Okcuoglu.

SOM LAND HOSTEL

Roomoo Design Studio

Formerly a disused building located on Shanghai’s Chongming Island, the space was transformed into a hostel by Roomoo Design Studio (Hotel, 7.15). A former home was converted into the main accommodation area while a two-storey addition was completed on the adjacent annex. Materials like recycled bricks and wood, clay paint, tree branches sourced on-site and upcycled textiles were used in the project, for circularity reasons and to connect the space to its locality. ‘Sustainability has been a major thought and is an integral aspect of this project,’ Arora says.
