On Wednesday 11 June 2014, Markmagazine celebrated 50 issues since its debut in December 2005. From the get-go, the magazine had put its focus on new, innovative and international projects presented in an ever-evolving graphic design and complemented by crisp visuals. It seems that the formula is still paying off, and judging by the successful party at Felix Meritis building in Amsterdam, the magazine has a bright future ahead.
After a brief introduction by Frame Publishers’ director Robert Thiemann, whose creative drive kick-started Mark following the international success of its older sibling Frame, it was time for the invited speakers. First up was Aaron Betsky: critic, writer, curator, educator and the former director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute. He outlined his thoughts about the future of architecture – and by extension architectural criticism – by describing a future in which a reconfiguration of activities and relations in existing spaces, complemented by the ongoing digital revolution will require a redefinition of the traditional way in which architecture is conceived and written about.
Second speaker, Martha Thorne, executive director of The Pritzker Architecture Prize, presented the case in favour of internationalisation instead of globalisation, both in architectural education and architecture alike. She also revealed how this affected the workings and ultimately the outcome of the profession’s most prestigious award, which was given to Shigeru Ban in a public ceremony at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum on 13 June 2014.
Afterwards, the guests were invited to mingle and engage in conversation to the tunes of a local, up-and-coming band Alexi Lalas and refreshments courtesy of Foyer. Naturally, selected issues of Mark were available for attendees’ perusal, and the Frame Store across the hall kicked off with its Summer Sale, offering enticing package deals on magazines and books by Frame Publishers.
