BOOKMARK ARTICLE

From new iterations of iconic design pieces to forward-looking, sustainable solutions, the best in Scandinavian product design (and beyond) was on the menu at 3DaysofDesign. Here are 12 products that caught the FRAME team’s eyes in Copenhagen.

Able

Blå Station

With the design of the Able armchair for Blå Station, Lindau, Borselius & Bernstrand took a multi-layered approach to sustainability. The versatile armchair considers a variety of factors in its design: it’s recyclable, upgradeable, changeable, renewable, dismountable, traceable, serviceable and adaptable, giving it a variety of uses and extending the materiality's lifespan.

Monolit

Fritz Hansen

Cecilie Manz paid mind to comfort first with the Monolit chair for Fritz Hansen. Created for lounging or dining, the chair’s form ensures its comfortability during long periods of sitting. Its wide, precisely cut-out front allows users to move around and change positions, giving the monolithic form dynamic use.

Kettelhut

House of Finn Juhl

House of Finn Juhl has relaunched its SW 86 chair, first designed in 1951, as the Kettelhut Chair. When the original design resurfaced to the manufacturer in 2021, Finn Juhl sought to bring the chair back into production because of the historical significance it holds for the company, representing its venture in the mid-20th century into the American market. Made with a combination of solid oak and walnut wood, the chair embraces the original design’s characteristic broad armrests and is upholstered in leather or textile.

Makuri

Koyori

Michael Anastassiades embraced the minimalism that unites Scandinavian and furniture brand Koyori’s Japanese heritage in his interpretation of its Makuri collection. Presented in a visually light structure made with a combination of plywood and solid wood elements, the new lounge chair and ottoman blend comfort with refined aesthetics.

ReThink

Kvadrat

Kvadrat invited 12 emerging and established creatives from around the world to participate in its ReThink exhibition, presented during 3DaysofDesign. Curated by Jeffrey Bernett, Anniina Koivu, Johanna Agerman Ross, Jane Withers and Njusja de Gier, the invited designers explored what responsible design means to them, using the brand’s recycled materials in addition to upcycled textiles, natural resources and circular resources. Pictured above is Fernando Laposse's The Good Shepherd, a rocking bench made with Kvadrat's woollen products.

Beyond

Maharam

Multimedia artist Jacob Hashimoto designed the Beyond collection of textiles for Maharam, making reference to the artist’s kite sculptures. Circular, botanical and geometric motifs, a nod to Hashimoto’s kites, are woven into the fabric in bright accent colours transforming the material into an artistic medium.

Patch Sofa

Massproductions

The modular Patch sofa system minimizes the use of polyurethane foam filling by incorporating steel springs from the bedding industry. Designed by Chris Martin for Massproductions, Patch gets its distinctive character from its rounded corners and top panels, softening the monolithic volumes and also serving a material-saving function.

Loja

Midgard

Loja is a series of lamps designed by Sebastian Herkner for Midgard. The collection is defined by its curving paper shade perched on a translucent mouth-blown glass cylinder, producing a gentle glow of light. The position of the shade can be adjusted to the desired effect and is made with completely recyclable paper, glass and steel.

Mads Nørgaard x Montana

Montana teamed up with Danish fashion designer Mads Nørgaard to celebrate the intersection of Scandinavian fashion and design. Combining Mads Nørgaard’s signature striped textile in two of Montana’s 41 carefully curated hues, Ruby and Balsamic, the fabric adorns the Free shelving system and Kevi office chair.

Settle

Muuto

For Muuto’s first soft outdoor seating series, Settle, Anderssen & Voll focused on reflecting the ever-increasing blurring of boundaries between in- and outdoor living environments. The pieces' steel tubes and supporting textile bands are a nod to the classic features of outdoor furniture. At the same time, their upholstered seats and backs lean into the comfort and feel of indoor furniture, resulting in a series of seats and sofas that benefit from the best of both environments.

Luna

Occhio

Occhio’s Luna series of luminaires produce soft yet powerful, directed and glare-free light, available in pendant, wall, ceiling and table light configurations. Taking on a celestial quality because of the light source’s illusion of floating, each piece is available in high-gloss dark chrome or phantom finishes.

Center Center

String Furniture

In response to its own need for a flexible working space, Form Us With Love designed the Center Center storage system for String Furniture. The modular system comprises perforated sheet metal boxes, finished in a powder coat, and can be combined with a number of other components, ensuring that users can easily and autonomously adjust it to suit their storage needs.
