Furniture Factory

BOOKMARK ARTICLE

Dutch designer Lucas Maassen has hired some little helpers – his three sons – to assist him in his latest project.

The children, aged nine and seven-year-old twins, have painted the furniture built in Maassen’s factory. They are paid €1 for every piece of furniture they paint, as agreed by a contract they signed. By law, they are only able to work three hours per week.

All furnishings are built and painted by hand – often quite quickly, as the boys have a busy timeline for their working hours. The resulting masterpieces feature the children’s aesthetic touches, including mixed brushwork techniques and imperfect detailing.
