Retail fever: stores top the most-viewed FRAME Awards list this week

BOOKMARK ARTICLE

Every week we highlight the FRAME Awards submissions which have been frequented by our readers and jury. Below are the five most-viewed projects between 29 March and 5 April 2024, shared with feedback left by the jury.

FUEGUIA 1833 SEOUL FLAGSHIP STORE

Common Room

Submitted in the Single-Brand Store category for the March round of FRAME Awards (6.39), Fueguia 1833’s Seoul flagship store was conceived by local studio Common Room. The intimate space gives patrons of the niche perfume brand room to explore various scents while engaging in all senses. Materials like pure raw silk, paper and charred wood are combined to achieve the warm atmosphere. Juror Jason Immaraju, creative director at NVE Experience Agency, said: ‘Beautiful interpretation of a brand persona and its origin story, manifested through the design.’

MC HOUSE CADDEBOSTAN

Escapefromsofa

Located in Istanbul, MC House Caddebostan is a 170-sq-m duplex apartment that doubles for living and gallery purposes, as the resident is a collector. Escapefromsofa focused on the dialogue between communal areas and private spaces, positioning a 40-sq-m linear living room at the core of the floorplan. The project ended at a score of 6.55 in the category Large Apartment in March. ‘My favourite part of this project is the details,’ said Immaraju. ‘There are so many amazing aspects to discover throughout the space the longer you look.’

 TIDE WAY

MSS

Mss aimed for a engaging play of light and shadow with the design of Tide Way, a shop for accessories brand Sanki in Osaka (6.58, Single-Brand Store; March).  ‘The space is composed of the architectural structure, a new design with simple details, and variable parts, while intentionally leaving the boundary with the existing part after demolition in various places as the element that connects them,’ explain the designers. Shigeru Uchida’s 1986 light design Tenderly is a central feature in the minimalistic store’s atrium.

NELLY FLAGSHIP STORE

Electric Dreams Design

Electric Dreams Design’s Stockholm three-floor outpost for fashion brand Nelly is the brand’s first bricks-and-mortar location. The designers embraced the history of the building – once the home of one of Sweden’s first modern department stores – to craft a bold, ambience-forward interior in a mix of white and pastels. It scored 5.99 for Multi-Brand Store in March. ‘The story and concept deserve a stronger execution, with more attention to detail,’ thought Rene Toneman, partner and creative director at Silo.

M.Y & Kinder

MSS

Another project from design studio Mss, M.Y & Kinder is a café and shop attached to a gynecology clinic in Fukuoka, Japan. A contender for Single-Brand Store (5.84, March), the refined interior functions as a ‘gentle and calming space for people visiting the adjacent gynecology clinic, where they can relax, and where they can purchase supplements related to infertility treatment,’ explain the designers.  Jana Kleine-Kalmer, interior designer and artist, acknowledged the 'beautifully clean detailing’ but felt that the space is missing ‘warmth and liveliness’, also questioning the role of privacy in the project.
