Every week we highlight the FRAME Awards submissions that have been frequented most by our readers and jury. Below are the five most-viewed projects between 7 and 14 March, shared with feedback left by the jury.
UN.union Hangzhou
Z One⁺Design
Z One⁺Design sought to address elements beyond the essential functions of a beauty salon with its design of the UN.union Hangzhou beauty space in the city’s Binjiang District (Single-Brand Store). Taking wayfinding and ‘refined experiences’ equally into account, the studio employed architectural volumes to divide the space into four main zones: leisure area, VIP area, hairdressing zone and foyer, while maintaining an open flow.

Shibuya City Botanical Garden Fureai
Suppose Design Office
As part of an effort to revive a Shibuya City municipal building into a community space, Suppose Design Office created an indoor ‘participatory’ botanical garden (Cultural Space). Shibuya City Botanical Garden Fureai seeks to overcome the traditional passive viewing experience and is activated for direct participation, through the incorporation of seating areas and workspaces among the lush gardens. Programmatic spaces such as a café, restaurant, shop, library, theater, farm and hydroponic cultivation room have been designated to further activate the indoor garden.

SLOWP
Snark Inc.
SLOWP is an initiative entirely undertaken by its designer, Snark Inc. (Cultural Space). Serving as a multipurpose and events space in Gunma, Japan, the cluster of huts is designed to flex to the needs of occupants through time. ‘I love how SLOWP highlights the beauty of traditional Japanese wooden-frame construction with such simplicity and flexibility,’ says Valeria Tsikhinia, design manager – interior design, and design and development at Al Futtaim Real Estate. ‘It’s a great example of how small, sustainable homes can provide diverse lifestyle options while having minimal environmental impact.’

House of Reason
None Space
As its name may suggest, House of Reason is a home that is guided by a philosophical ethos (House). During the briefing process with the occupant of the Seongnam, South Korea home, None Space was asked to design a space that reflected this reasoned ethos. The resulting space is a 148-sq-m home that is wrapped around a central courtyard and employs a mono-material approach between rooms, to create a contemplative living environment.
