BOOKMARK ARTICLE

Every week we highlight the FRAME Awards submissions which have been frequented by our readers and jury. Below are the five most-viewed projects between 24 and 31 May 2024, shared with feedback left by the jury.

Ravine

A Work of Substance

Ravine is a residence for a family of four, located in Ubud, Bali (House, 7.65). Its architecture is designed to pay homage to Balinese heritage carefully balancing nature and culture. Nestled in the forest, the large openings in the home's layout connect residents with their natural surroundings. A Work of Substance’s design creates a space where private and public areas coexist, fostering connection and contemplation. The use of vernacular material minimizes the project's ecological impact. ‘Very soothing and contemplative,' says Laura Guido-Clark, founder of Love Good Color. 'Cultural practices and craftmanship are evident.'

SOUNDER INN

Neospace

Situated between Siming Lake in Yuyao and the ancient village of Guanpei in China, Sounder Inn’s design blends ecological awareness and traditional culture (Material, 6.76). Serving as a rural sanctuary, and an escape from the busyness of urban life, the building unfolds along the forested mountain, with picturesque views accessible from every guest room. Local stone, dried bamboo, rice paper and handwoven decorative elements elevate the essence of regional culture. Recycled antique elements such as the entrance door, steps, bedside pillar bases, long tables and decorative bamboo pay homage to Chinese heritage. Matthew Senkowycz, cofounder of Loom Atelier enjoyed the 'quirks' of the project, commenting that 'the antiques, for example, and the rice paper ceiling shapes add so much depth of character within the minimalism.’

METASEQUOIA WONDERLAND

Hangzhou Uzan Design Technology

Metasequoia Wonderland in Jiefang Park, Wuhan, is an interactive, tech-led installation offering an educational experience on environmental issues (Exhibition, 7.18). Through spatial scenography, graphic design and videos, the project creates a ‘dream wetland’. A variety of plants and animals provide different scenarios as guests walk through. Open-source data is used and visualized in real-time, depicting, for example, the number of migratory birds in Wuhan. Combining lighting interaction, big data visualization, radar sensors and other technologies, the exhibition creates an immersive environment for learning. ‘Immersive educational experiences are the future,' says Shaikha Al-Sulaiti, founder of Shaikha Al Sulaiti. 'The integration of technology with design is incredible and can be extremely impactful.'

GOGOLAND

Informal Design

Gogoland is a pet-friendly public space in Huizhou, China (Single-Brand Store, 7.64). The informal design, influenced by the site's unique position in the neighbourhood, saw the transformation of the underutilized building to house Gogoland. The resulting design focuses on introducing natural light into the interior and seamlessly blending nature and architecture. Green details throughout the space evoke the brand’s identity and enhance the overall ambience. The furniture was designed to create a soothing environment for pets, with enough space underneath for canines to explore and play. 'Beautiful approach to designing for humans and pets,' says Maria Felicitas Navia, founder at OHIO Estudio.

AESOP STORE

Ciszak Dalmas & Matteo Ferrari

Located in Madrid’s Salamanca district, the Aesop store embraces local culture and brand identity through a sustainable design (Single-Brand Store, 7.88). Ciszak Dalmas and Matteo Ferrari were inspired by Aesop’s philosophy to elevate the customer experience. A natural graphene wall naturally regulates the interior temperature, requiring minimal maintenance. The preservation of the original façade pays homage to the neighbourhood’s legacy, and Spanish craftsmanship is celebrated through locally sourced materials, furniture and art. ‘The space expertly balances various elements while highlighting the essence of the brand,' says Shuhei Aoyama, founder and director at B.L.U.E. Architecture Studio.
