Report : The Vipp Kitchen

BOOKMARK ARTICLE

Product-design specialist Vipp envisioned its first kitchen as a trio of stand-alone modules, with great attention to detail, says head designer Morten Bo Jensen.

What inspired you to design a kitchen?

Morten Bo Jensen: It actually started as a wild idea. Vipp’s large pedal bin is intended for use in the kitchen. Generally speaking, people choose the kitchen first and the pedal bin last. We wondered whether we could turn that around.

How did you approach the project?

We always stay true to our DNA: to a functional, semi-industrial approach that’s rooted in a strong tradition. We have considerable expertise when it comes to rubber and steel. We pay close attention to detail, and our products are made to last. Together, these are the ingredients of our recipe for every new product – including the kitchen.

What distinguishes this kitchen from other kitchens?

The kitchen is often a standardized system that can be adapted to the available space. Our kitchen consists of three independent modules: a kitchen island, wall units, and tall units for appliances such as the refrigerator. By combining the various components in any number of ways, you can create a configuration that is ideal for any room.

Why did you design the kitchen this way?

This is the way that professional kitchens are put together, and we want those who use our kitchen to feel as if they have their hands on professional tools. That’s also part of our DNA. When you pick up a fantastic kitchen knife to cut vegetables, for instance, you feel as though you’ll do a better job than you would with a regular knife. That’s the effect we were after.

How did you attain your other goal – a kitchen built to last?

To start with, we used high-quality materials. And, theoretically, a kitchen made up of freestanding elements can be moved from house to house, almost indefinitely. It would be great if that happened. It’s not a trendy design. We always strive for a universal design language. Innovation emerges from the perfection of details.
