Jo Nagasaka (Schemata Architects) has been exploring the craft of Udukuri for a show at Spazio Rossana Orlandi next week. The technique involves applying several layers of colour to wooden surfaces, then gently scraping the surfaces with a grass brush to reveal the grain and the play of colours together.
Nendo also used the Udukuri technique for Coloured Pencil Tables (shown at the Saint-Etienne Biennale) but to a much subtler effect – Schemata’s vibrant comic-book colours give these basic furniture pieces an instant impact and modern update.
