WAM Architecten Office

BOOKMARK ARTICLE

The studio, located in Delft, is organized around one giant room where staff members can work as a team in an open, light atmosphere. Since the space has no windows and only skylights, the architects opened it to the street; they kept the garage doors intact and constructed a glass façade 3m behind them. During the daytime, the garage doors are open and a sheltered entrance area is a mediator between street life and the office. At closing hours, the doors are shut and the studio disappears into the night. The entranceway is shaped like a ‘mastaba’ or Egyptian tomb; inside the office another mastaba box holds the photocopier and printers. ‘The mastabas are covered with wool to improve acoustics,’ explains architect Wilfried van Winden. ‘It’s rather experimental and we had to find a fastening method. We used leather strings and literally sewed the corners together. The result looks great! It’s used inside and outside and we’re curious what it will look like over time.’ Van Winden says it's not uncommon for passers-by to walk into the studio, thinking it's a shop, but the architects take it in good stride.
