Under the direction of architect Boris Banozic, students from the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt played illusionists at last month's Salone del Mobile.
Trillusion, an installation on display at the SaloneSatellite during Milan design week, explored the relationship between furniture and space. The piece questioned whether furniture defines space or is an extension of it, and how furniture can adapt to a space and vice versa.
Three basic furniture elements – a bench, bar table and desk – appeared to extend further into the space thanks to the graphic treatment of the stand.
‘The synthesis between furniture and graphics blurs the boundaries between reality and illusion,’ Banozic says. ‘Surface becomes space; space becomes surface.’
Awkward angles intrigued visitors to take a closer look and explore which elements of the stand were indeed functional, while the use of three colours – black, white and orange – formed an abstract shadow play.
