A grassroots initiative in Toronto, Canada, is seeking to create a community rooftop garden and learning space above an intercity building.
The Everything Roof will use recycled and reclaimed materials to create an urban space dedicated to farming, green lifestyles and integrated community engagement.
The concept creators, a Toronto-based arts and environmental collective called About Face, say the project will have long-lasting environmental and social impacts. Once complete, the 204-sq-m Toronto rooftop will include a community lounge, educational area and food garden.
‘Converting black tar rooftop space into green space helps reduce storm water runoff,’ says Natalie Boustead, project manager. ‘We'll be growing food, selling it in the building below and using it on-site in educational programming, effectively eliminating the emissions it normally takes to transport produce into urban areas!’
The concept will be set on top of the Centre for Social Innovation, Annex. The project is being realized in collaboration with the Sketch Working Arts for Street Involved and Homeless Youth and Skate4Cancer.
