Amsterdam has a spring in its step and it also has an American artist taking over a number of the city's galleries, shops and streets. April is 'Ryan McGinness month' as we celebrate the launch of his new book: Everything Is Everywhere.
New York-based Ryan McGinness is interested in assuming the power of this visual language in order to share personal expressions. Known for his original extensive vocabulary of graphic drawings, he creates a universe of symbols and signs using different artistic disciplines. He comments, 'At the core of all the work that I do – sculpture, paintings, installations – is drawing. I'm always sketching, and my drawings are then digitised to create the artworks.' This video gives further background into the artist's inspiration and working processes:
If you are in Amsterdam anytime soon, watch out for the visuals that keep cropping up alongside the city's canals as part of a guerrilla poster campaign. They will point the way to the artist's colourful works, with events and exhibitions unfolding to reveal the unique process of how those works were created.
Two exhibitions will open this week, running in conjunction at different ends of the city (4 April to 10 May 2014 at Vous Etes Ici in NDSM Wharf; and 5 April to 10 May 2014 at Galerie Ron Mandos on Prinsengracht), with a a colourful launch event to follow. In collaboration with the American Book Center on Spui on Saturday 12 April – there will be an opportunity for public engagement with McGinness' work, which will see real life cars wrapped in original art.
Until its release date of 8 April, Everything Is Everywhere is available to pre-order with a 20% discount. Clickhere for more information.
