Orbits of High Velocity Stars by Björn Dahlem

On display at the Galerie Guido W. Baudachin Berlin, Björn Dahlem’s ‘Orbits of High Velocity Stars’, is conceptually based upon a recently discovered type of star. A spatial installation is generated by depicting their irregular travel paths which tend to concentrate around high-mass gravitational points like black holes.

Suspended within the gallery, two abstracted stars formed with geodesic frames are punctuated with diverse illuminated light bulbs and fixtures. Trailed by wooden lathes, their intertwined paths interact with the space’s structural columns to demonstrate the cosmic phenomenon within a moment in time. Mounted on a wall, a small black box enclosed with a glass vitrine introduces the philosophical idea of black matter.

Understanding complex theories and laws of the universe by translating them into sculpture, the work of Munich-born, Berlin-based artist revolves in and around the natural sciences. Preoccupied with microcosms and macrocosms and heavens and earth, the sculptor explores these opposing ideas with artificial lighting, literally and figuratively referring to the illumination he intends to offer through his art.

The exhibition runs from 2 May until 7 June 2014.
