Long Studio

FOGO ISLAND – This is the biggest of the four studios Saunders Architecture has realized on Fogo Island on Canada’s Atlantic coast.

The Nowary-based architect has been commissioned by the Fogo Island Arts Corporation to realize seven structures from 2010 to 2012. Spanning 130-sq-m, Long Studio is propped upon concrete stilts to appear floating atop a rocky landscape.

‘Its form seems to trace the gentle slope of the bedrock, as its 30m long south elevation – an uninterrupted expanse of rough-sawn spruce planks – rises towards the sea,’ Saunders says. ‘The project’s robust architectural character certainly resonates with the sensibility of this place.’

The façade is clad in rough-sawn pine planks. Inside the floors, walls and ceiling are covered in horizontal planks of smooth white pine. It’s equipped with a wood-burning stove, kitchenette, sink, water tank, compost toilet, shower and ladder that leads to an elevated sleeping loft.

Long Studio is located in the town of Joe Batt’s Arm, on Fogo Island’s northern coast. Four of the six commissioned studios are complete (including Bridge Studio, Squish Studio and Tower Studio); Short Studio and Fogo Studio are set to be finished later this year.
