Flora Metamorphicae

BOOKMARK ARTICLE

Collaborative studio Flora Metamorphicae reinterprets the traditional decorative use of flower ceramics into beautiful installations both within nature and exhibiting spaces.

Flora Metamorphicae originated in 2003, when a group of professional ceramists became inspired by images from a book on traditional ceramics. Since then the Norwegian group, now consisting of six artists, has created many works and won awards for their unique site-specific pieces.

There are only two rules in the production of Flora Metamorphicae’s artworks: each flower has to be hand-made and its dimension should not be more than two hands. The installations integrate into  open space, blurring the definition of artificial and natural. They gain a particularly strong impact when installed in water; the ebb and flows of the water gives them an ever-changing essence, putting them in perfect harmony with their surroundings.

Flora Metamorphicae’s installations are also fit for art gallery spaces, delivering a taste of nature within the rooms.

For their original concept and the original exploration of art within nature, Flora Metamorphicae has been nominated for the ArtPrize 2012, the art open contest taking place in Grand Rapids, Michigan, between 19 September and 7 October.
