TOKYO – An old Tokyo warehouse has had a total facelift, transforming it from grimy and outdated to sleek and modern.
Architect Jun’ichi Ito says he was inspired to reuse the existing building to avoid C02 emissions that would be created in demolition. He wanted to make the design the new core of the structure, somehow reflecting its surroundings.
The result is a fresh new steel façade that appears woven in panels across the entire building. It allows natural light to enter, while ensuring privacy for those inside. The material doesn’t easily become dirty, as rain water washes it clean. The woven pattern increases strength and stability.
