Charles and Ray Eames – two of the most influential figures in the early American design scene – are the main characters in a new documentary devoted to their life and work.
Creative and innovators in design, architecture and even film, the Eames’ signature aesthetic can be found in several design classics – some of which are still produced until this day.
Eames: The architect and the painter is the first film about the husband and wife duo since their deaths in 1978 and 1988 respectively. It combines reports from the couple’s professional and personal lives, which often blended.
The film also includes newly discovered letters, films and exclusive interviews with family members, including Charles’ daughter from his first marriage, Lucia, and grandson Eames Demetrios. The film also gathers testimonials from collaborators of the renowned Eames Office in Venice, California, giving an insight on the studio that ran for more than 40 years (1943-1988).
‘Dozens of gifted young designers cut their teeth within the walls of the studio,’ the film says. ‘It was a career that defined what it means to be a designer.’
