The construction of the 220 sq m space was overseen by the founder of GAD, Gokhan Avcioglu, who mixed wood, stone, cement and plaster throughout the shop. A floor of solid oak wood herringbone lies throughout, as would traditionally be the case in residential homes in Turkey. The cantilevered steel stairs allow passers-by on the street to see freely into the space. Meanwhile, unfinished carved shelves are used to display antiques, while cable conduits behind walls allow for flexible lighting that can be adapted depending on displays. ‘The main architectural approach was to produce separate articulations of one space and give a familiar and cosy feeling at the same time,’ says Ozlem Avcýoglu, who co-owns the store with Murat Patavi. ‘The idea was to keep the space as flexible as possible, so events or new product displays can be created.’ Haaz Design and Art Gallery carries brands like Moroso, Tom Dixon, BD Barcelona and Droog. It opened in January 2011.
